Through the study of representative works from male and female writers reflecting differing social, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds and views, this course examines the resulting history of conflicts and strains in political and philosophical views that both unify and divide our country. Students have the opportunity to read fiction and nonfiction in genres including captivity narratives, public journals, private diaries and letters, autobiographies, essays, plays, poetry, and novels.
