    It is difficult to overstate the impact that insects and related arthropods have on human agroecosystems. They are important recyclers of organic material in soils, required pollinators for hundreds of food crops, and are essential allies in managing agricultural pests. In their role as pests and vectors of plant diseases, insects are our greatest competitors for food; destroying a large proportion of our post-harvest stores and reaping untold pre-harvest damage to nearly all plant parts in every plant-based food system in the world. This course is fill introduction to beneficial and pestiferous insects and their management in the context of agriculture arid is supported by the application of applied entomology in 6 semesters of Regenerative Field Lab (EVSC 200) for majors in the Environmental Science Regenerative Agriculture track. Students in other majors may take the course as a brief, stand-alone introduction to the concepts of agricultural entomology.

  • EVSC 207: Soil Analysis

    Soils are complex and dynamic systems. To improve and maintain high soil quality, one must understand how the individual components of soil, from the water that flows through the pores to the elemental composition of the soil particles, change over time under different conditions. This course focuses on developing knowledge of the physical, chemical, and biological measurements of soil, the techniques that are employed, and how the results aid in soil regeneration and identifying healthy soil. Understanding soil sampling schema is also an integral part of this course as analyses would be meaningless without knowing how to obtain a sample that is representative of a given space. This course is intended as a theoretical introduction to soil analysis in the context of agriculture and is supported by application of soil science in 6 semesters of Regenerative Field Lab (EVSC 200) for majors in the Environmental Science Regenerative Agriculture track.   • EVSC 208: Biogeochemical Cycles

    Biogeochemical cycles and processes are complex in that many factors influence the local to global flux and pools of nutrients and materials among the atmosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere. This course focuses on developing knowledge of the description and interpretation of the fundamental physical, biological and chemical principles of nutrient cycles at multiple spatial scales with a focus on impacts to agriculture.     This course involves laboratory work and/or a field study and/or library research on a selected topic in environmental science. The work will be supervised by one or more faculty members associated with the Environmental Science Program. The research topic will be acceptable to both the supervising faculty and the student.
