  Intermediate and advanced instruction in choral and instrumental conducting techniques for music educators. Knowledge and skill areas stressed are a review of conducting gestures and patterns; advanced score interpretation, rehearsal management and technique, special challenges in choral and instrumental contexts. This course is designed to refine pre-existing choral and/or instrumental conducting skills in the music educator. Specific attention will be given to the music teacher as conductor. Areas of study include: 1) advanced conducting technique; 2) advanced score study, marking, and preparation; and 3) advanced rehearsal techniques. Representative literature from various ensembles and periods will be studied and conducted. Successful completion of this course can lead to conducting opportunities with university ensembles.

  This course is for students seeking to learn about popular music. No previous musical knowledge is required. The course will examine three aspects of music: the societal and cultural context that produces musical style, the technical construction of the music itself, and the resultant ideas that music expresses. To gain a deep understanding of these, the student will listen to and analyze historical musical examples and engage in "hands-on" work, using software applications to compose and produce songs.

Students will also learn how that culture has been defined and redefined, represented and displayed, both by Pennsylvania Germans and others.

This survey will examine the beginning of the Pennsylvania German literary tradition in the middle of the 19th century and its development throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century. The literature includes material in Pennsylvania German that is translated into English and English literature with Pennsylvania German themes and subjects.
