    HCPCS codes are fully integrated to enhance the student's depth of knowledge. This course will focus on bringing all aspects of coding together and provide the student with a simulated coding internship, preparing them to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam. Real world chart analysis (abstracting) will be the focus that will provide the student with skill advantage over other medical coders. Note(s): Students must earn a "C" or higher in all HSC courses in order to graduate from the program. Prerequisite:    HSC 100, HSC 130, HSC 205, and HSC 210

    This course provides an overview of the disease processes and introduces students to how the disease is diagnosed, managed, along with any possible consequences. Major disease entities, including etiology and symptoms that are presented. Overview of basic diagnostic tests and treatments that include both medical and pharmacologic options. This course will not only cover traditional but alternative therapies as well. This course will include a virtual component enhancing the students'' understanding of the concepts associated with basic diseases of each body system as well as up to date treatment modalities. Prerequisite:    HSC 100 (Grade of C or Higher) and HSC 130 (Grade of C or Higher)

    This course builds upon the concepts in Medical Assisting Administrative I while introducing advanced administrative skills. A comparison of electronic and manual systems will be explained and demonstrated. Concepts including telephone etiquette, scheduling management, organizational design, and practice management will also be studied. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to enter the medical assistant field with confidence in their administrative skills. NOTE: Students must earn a C or higher in all HSC courses in order to advance in the curriculum and graduate from the program. Prerequisite:    HSC 121 (Grade of C or Higher) and Clearances (Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History and Child Abuse History)

    This course will focus on bringing all aspects of medical coding, billing and health information together and preparing students to take any certified coding, billing and other health information exams with a focus on the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam. Chart analysis, abstraction and practice test taking will be the focus that will provide the student with a skill advantage over other medical coders. Prerequisite:    HSC 205 (Grade of C or Higher) and HSC 210 (Grade of C or Higher)

    This is a self-directed simulation where the medical coding and billing specialist student will have the opportunity to learn to become proficient in the field of medical coding and billing. The student will learn by way of conversational language and step-by-step instruction to abstract information from medical charts, code it for the proper reimbursement and bill it by completing the right documents and forms. The preparatory courses that lead to the simulation prepare the student with the knowledge and tools to complete the self-directed simulation with confidence and expertise. Prerequisite:    HSC 205 (Grade of C or Higher) and HSC 210 (Grade of C or Higher)

    This course builds upon the concepts in Medical Assisting Clinical I while introducing advanced clinical skills. More complex and independent procedures performed by the medical assistant are presented in addition to surgical procedures, obtaining urine and culture specimens, and 12-lead electrocardiograms. Emphasis is placed on infection control, proper identification, labeling, handling, and processing of specimens. The student is challenged to think critically in various clinical situations. Assessment of health education needs for patients and families is integrated throughout this course. This course offers skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and standard precautions. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to enter the medical assistant field and perform clinical skills with confidence and accuracy.     Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining good health and preventing chronic disease. Nutritional therapy in clinical situations is an adaptation of the principles of normal nutrition. Proper application of these principles can maximize restoration of health. This course introduces the nursing student to the fundamentals of medical nutrition therapy with direct application to the nursing process. The course provides an introduction of human nutrition including nutritional requirements, metabolism, and nutritional biochemistry. Nutritional needs and problems across the lifespan are addressed. Nutritional therapeutics for specific disease states are thoroughly examined.

    This is a rigorous course intended for post-baccalaureate students only. It provides an accountant intending to pursue their Certified Public Accounting (CPA) license the opportunity to prepare for successful completion of the information systems and controls (ISC) portion of the licensure exam. Topics covered include regulations, standards, and frameworks, information systems and data management, security and confidentiality, and System and Organization Controls (SOC) engagements.

    This class provides the knowledge of the revenue cycle and financial management process in healthcare billing which includes all steps taken in each phase of the cycle and financial aspect of healthcare billing. Included are presentations of the major private sector and governmental health insurances. The methodology of revenue cycle from start to finish is presented. Operational management in the outpatient and inpatient settings are integrated in this course.

    This is a self-directed practicum where the medical coding and billing specialist student will have the opportunity to learn to become proficient in the field of medical coding and billing. The student will learn by way of conversational language and step-by-step instruction to abstract information from medical charts, code it for the proper reimbursement and bill it by completing the right documents and forms. The preparatory courses that lead to the practicum prepare the student with the knowledge and tools to complete the self-directed practicum with confidence and expertise. A HIPAA training course with presentation of a certificate of completion is also part of this course. This is considered a capstone course as it is reflective of and utilizes learning from all courses taken throughout the course of the degree earned.
