    Focuses on the acquisition of Spanish language and terminology related to law enforcement and homeland security, as well as current professional practices in Spanish-speaking countries. Contemporary texts, documentaries, films, and other relevant primary sources provide context for in-class discussion and group projects to develop cultural awareness of Spanish and Spanish American law enforcement and homeland security practices.

    Develops students' understanding of everyday life, customs, and social issues in Spain and Latin America. Speaking and listening comprehension exercises in Spanish are supplemented by current primary sources in a communicative context. Anticipated proficiency upon successful completion of the course is the Intermediate-High sublevel (based upon the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages).

    Analyzes Spanish sound system. Drills on pronunciation and intonation. Selections of prose, poetry, and songs for imitation. Includes a study of the speech organs and how this knowledge helps to articulate and pronounce Spanish language words with more precision and better sentence rhythm. Introduces students to and practice of the International Phonetic Alphabet for transcription of Spanish speech.

    Presents the fundamental theories as tools to confront the most significant practical problems that may arise in specialized translation and interpretation. The theories will focus on the acquisition of the fundamentals on translation/interpretation theory to facilitate the comprehension of multidisciplinary translation/interpretation and the variety of theoretical approaches. Students engage in group translation/interpretation activities; read texts critically; develop the basic necessary skills to translate texts in professional contexts.

Students learn to apply translation/interpretation techniques and strategies to resolve language-specific translation/interpretation problems, while practicing the translation of longer texts in a variety of categories that may include literature, healthcare, and the law. Proficiency in English and Spanish is required.

    Provides opportunities for students to apply the theory learned in the classroom to situations occurring in the workplace. Careful planning with the department's internship coordinator enables the students to schedule these experiences to complement their academic program. Participation in the university's internship adds an important dimension to student's educational experience and future career plans.
